Holy Scripture The Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation... In the name of the Holy Scripture we do understand those canonical books of the Old and New Testament of whose authority was never any doubt in the church. Excerpt from Article 5, THE ARTICLES OF RELIGION OF THE METHODIST CHURCH
I believe the scripture to be "inspired writings of inspired men who had inspired relationships with God." In this, I see scripture as the recording of those relationships with God and thus profitable for use in pointing us to right relationship with God as well.
I believe the authority of scripture comes from the Holy Spirit as Holy Spirit reveals how to apply scripture to our lives. I see the bible then, as inspired words about God, that when revealed (illuminated) by the Holy Spirit on how to apply to our relationships, become the Word of God to us.
This position requires however that I am utmostly honest with God and myself. To ignore what God reveals to me because it makes me uncomfortable, is a living a lie and breaks my relationship to God. This position then requires me to seek guidance from the Holy Spirit on how to apply scripture, and then have the courage and power to implement that application.
In my ministry I take scripture seriously, this is revealed in my sermon notes. I preach from scripture with authority as Christ did, but only after seeking guidance of Holy Spirit on what and how to preach. Amen
